Hydro-Electric Power Explained

Hydroelectric power is becoming a topic that many people are interested in. Many people are wondering if this will be the power that will replace the dependency upon other power sources that are contaminating our environment, as well as depleting natural resources. The scientific world is constantly looking at different power sources, and hydroelectric power was one of the first type that was ever considered. Simply because hydroelectric power has been in use for thousands of years, however, people have not figured out just how they could use the process in order to power the world. Today, these hydroelectric power plants only account for around 20% of what is powering the world, however, they are in use, so that is a step into the right direction.

But the main question on everyone's mind is just how does hydroelectric power work? This question is very easy to answer. The main components in hydroelectric is water. When a power station of this kind is built, a dam is built along with the station. Usually this dam is built in a low valley or where there is already a source of water such as a pond because it means that it would be a more natural fit in this area.

The water that is in the area is going to flow through what those in the profession call a pen stock, this is basically a very large pipe that can be either below or above ground. Once the water goes through this pipe the force of the water turns the turbines that are located inside, causing them to turn, this is where the energy is produced. The turbine is propelling the generator to turn as the turbine is turning.

The generator is turning the spinning shaft, which is basically a circle of copper that while it is turned produces electrons that in turns produces the electricity needed. This energy is then transferred to electrical grids in which there are mechanical aspects that increase the number of electrons that were originally produced and the electricity is then passed onto those in the area.

The process of hydroelectricity may seem a bit complex, however, it is rather simple once the dam is built and water begins to flow. The station can then produce enough power to power the area. The problem is that these stations and dams are rather expensive to build. However, when they are built they can begin producing power immediately and for much cheaper rates than current electric companies they rely on other sources of power. Plus, there are no harmful emissions released into the atmosphere and since it uses water, it is much more reliable than other options. On the downside, it is hard to find a good place in which to build the dam and the station without affecting animals and residents in the area drastically. Plus, the water quality in the area can be affected, which is a reason why more people are not embracing the idea of hydroelectricity than they may have otherwise.
